WHITEHOUSE — For individuals facing mental, emotional, or physical challenges, a unique place of healing exists just off the beaten path in Whitehouse.

Founded in January 2020, Starbrite Therapeutic Equestrian Center opened with a simple but powerful goal: to share how horses can profoundly improve the lives of those dealing with a wide range of difficulties. Since its founding, Starbrite has grown rapidly, now reaching full capacity with a waiting list for new participants.

At the heart of Starbrite’s work is its mission: to utilize equine-assisted activities to spread the love of Christ by empowering youth, adults, and Veterans with a variety of needs and abilities.

“We continue to grow and currently have a waiting list due to being at max capacity,” said Trent Goodwin, CEO of Starbrite. “Our new arena and barn will allow us to serve more riders in the near future.”

Starbrite offers a range of equine-assisted activities to individuals with cognitive, physical, emotional, and social disabilities, as well as to Veterans and first responders. Two of its major programs include Therapeutic Riding and Horses for Heroes.

Therapeutic Riding helps improve muscle strength, balance, coordination, and motor skills. Participants often experience notable gains in cognitive processing, communication, emotional regulation, and social engagement. Riding and interacting with horses can also reduce anxiety, alleviate symptoms of depression, and boost overall emotional and physical well-being.

Horses for Heroes focuses on supporting Veterans, active-duty military, and first responders dealing with PTSD, anxiety, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and physical challenges. The program fosters trust, reduces stress, and helps participants build resilience. Studies show that 80% of those involved report lower stress levels and improved social connections after participating.

Currently, Starbrite serves individuals ranging in age from 4 to 84, providing a Christ-centered environment where healing happens naturally through the bond between human and horse.

“What makes Starbrite special is the combination of a Christ-centered atmosphere, a staff that loves their job, volunteers that tirelessly show up to serve, and the healing opportunities that horses provide,” Goodwin said. “It’s difficult to put into words the miracles that happen here. It is a tangible feeling of peace, comfort and joy that must be experienced to be understood.”

Starbrite also has several upcoming events and fundraising opportunities planned for the community, including the 2025 Spring Rider Exhibition. The event, titled Faith in Motion: Riding with a Purpose, will celebrate the incredible journey of Starbrite’s riders with a joyful showcase of horsemanship, growth, and resilience. Families, friends, and the local community are invited to join the free event on the grounds of Starbrite Therapeutic Equestrian Center, located at 15015 FM 848 in Whitehouse. The exhibition will take place over three and a half hours and offers a chance to enjoy sunshine, fresh air, and the magic of the barn.
