On Sunday, May 18, motorcycle enthusiasts from all over East Texas will gather for the annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in an effort to bring awareness to two of the most complex issues facing men around the globe: prostate cancer and mental health.
Globally, on average, 1 man dies by suicide every minute of every day, and according to 2023 statistics, approximately 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is an official fundraising partner for The Movember Foundation—the leading global charity that not only brings awareness to men’s health issues but also helps to fund research and other men’s health initiatives.
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was founded in Sydney, Australia, by Mark Hawwa. It was inspired by a photo of TV Show Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic motorcycle and wearing his finest suit. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride looks to encourage riders around the world who own and ride classic and custom style motorcycles and scooters to dress dapper and unite in a parade through the heart of their city to raise funds and awareness for men’s health.
The City of Tyler has participated in The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride since 2020, with Pedro Tamez as host since 2021. Pedro is a passionate mental health advocate who is trying to bring awareness to the struggles many men face every day, right here in Smith County.
Through his eBort and initiative, Pedro has put Tyler, Texas, on the map. Out of the 923 cities participating worldwide in 2024, Tyler placed 67th on the leaderboard for donations made. Last year, 63 riders participated and $25,263 was raised. DGR Tyler Host Team is hoping to exceed these numbers in 2025 and make an increased eBort to connect Smith County men to available local health resources.
