Mickey Smith

Mickey Smith, 68, is a lifelong Tyler resident who recently joined ETX Bell after a five-year hiatus to focus on family and health.

Smith has long been a familiar face in the East Texas sports scene. He previously served as a coach and coordinator for several area youth leagues and held two separate terms as program director at the YMCA. Over the years, he has worked in various roles including coach, media and public relations officer for UT Tyler, basketball official, and baseball umpire.

His career includes stints in minor league baseball with the Tyler WildCatters and in Arena Football 2 with the Amarillo Dusters. He also worked as a play-by-play announcer for KDOK and other local radio stations throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.

Smith eventually transitioned into sportswriting, serving as sports editor in Jacksonville, Rusk, and Bullard. His work has appeared in publications across Tyler, Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston.

A 1975 graduate of Bishop T.K. Gorman High School, Smith was a three-sport all-state athlete in basketball, track and baseball. He played one year of junior college basketball before beginning a 12-year career in music.

Smith is a single father of two: daughter Leanne Schultz of Denton, and son Matt, who lives and teaches in Ecuador.
