TROUP — The Troup Chamber of Commerce recognized local leaders, educators, public servants and volunteers during its annual awards banquet on March 26 at Troup High School.
The event brought together residents, business leaders and community members to celebrate contributions that continue to shape and strengthen the Troup area.
Among the top honors, Beth Byrd was named Citizen of the Year. Byrd has served the community for decades through volunteer work, church involvement and civic engagement, often working behind the scenes to support local efforts.
The Joe Layne Family Community Builder Award was presented to Stevie Oakes, recognizing long-term dedication to community service and leadership.
Christopher Chambers was named Municipal Employee of the Year. Chambers, a public works employee and Navy veteran, was recognized for his leadership, adaptability and role as a field supervisor overseeing daily operations for the city.
Police Chief Shawn Murry received Police Officer of the Year honors for his leadership of the Troup Police Department and commitment to professionalism, accountability and community trust.
Kim Kee was named Volunteer Firefighter of the Year for her service and ongoing support of the Troup Volunteer Fire Department.
In education, several Troup ISD staff members were honored:
- Anthony Harris, Middle School Teacher of the Year
- Chuck Boyd, High School Teacher of the Year
- Myra Foley, District and Elementary Teacher of the Year
- Devon Simmons, Paraprofessional of the Year
The Business of the Year award went to Cherokee County Electric Cooperative.
The evening also included recognition of chamber leadership, special guests and scholarship recipients, along with a live auction.
Chamber President Melanie Brumit highlighted the importance of community involvement in her remarks, noting that the chamber’s success is driven by local businesses and residents who invest their time and resources into Troup.
Mayor Jeff Hale also addressed attendees, reflecting on progress made in the city and emphasizing continued efforts to improve infrastructure and quality of life.
